Jon Kulok

Principal
Jon Kulok

A Co-Founder and Principal of Edge, Jon has spent 25 years in the survey research field developing strategic quantitative and qualitative research for clients in the corporate, political, and non-profit sectors.

Jon has developed, executed, and analyzed strategic market research studies for such diverse companies as Citrix Systems, California Dental Association, Sprint/Nextel, and ESPN.com. Whether working on a branding study for a global corporation, a usability test for a start-up, or measuring loyalty and predicting retention for a membership association, Jon brings a combination of industry experience, statistical know-how, and business savvy to each job. Many clients continue to seek him out for advice long after their studies are completed.

Jon began his marketing research career at Peter Hart Associates, followed by almost a decade as an analyst for The Mellman Group. He founded Edge Research in 1997 because he was interested in using new methodologies to get better information to clients faster and for less money.

Over the last few years, Jon has served on the boards of two start-up technology companies, Viral Media Productions and CimSuite. An avid sports fan, he started playing fantasy baseball during the Reagan years, and now gets his thrills cheering on his children Sydney and Will on the soccer and baseball fields.

Pam Loeb

Principal
Pam Loeb

Pam provides trusted counsel and custom marketing research for clients big and small. As a Principal at Edge, she works regularly with marquee brands to design studies and provide insights that drive their business – K¹² Inc., Kaiser Permanente, National 4-H Council, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, U.S. Travel Association, the USO, and The Washington Post, to name a few. Pam also manages the firm’s Education and Health & Wellness practices.

While Pam enjoys working with corporations on their branding, messaging, advertising, and new product development, she is also passionate about helping non-profits with their unique challenges, including donor development and retention, public education, and advocacy. Over the last 20 years, she has managed hundreds of studies for NGOs and professional associations to improve their communications and public awareness efforts. Pam has co-authored and presented several public sector-wide studies examining the attitudes, values, and behaviors of charitable donors, which have been featured in The Wall Street Journal and USA Today.

Prior to joining Edge, Pam was Vice President and Executive Director of The Mellman Group where she provided senior analysis and managed the firm’s business operations. Pam’s clients included major non-profit organizations, government agencies, political candidates, and corporations, including United Airlines, the U.S. Department of State, Independent Sector, and World Wildlife Fund. Pam began her market research career at Greenberg-Lake: The Analysis Group, which provided research and strategy to political candidates and non-profit organizations.

Pam and her family live in Baltimore, Maryland, where she is involved in a variety of civic organizations, including Any Given Child (a joint venture between the Baltimore City Public Schools and the Kennedy Center), Enoch Pratt Free Library, and Friends School of Baltimore, where she serves on the Board of Trustees.

 

Lisa Dropkin

Principal
Lisa Dropkin

Lisa, a Principal at Edge, works with a diverse array of clients from large corporations like Intuit (makers of TurboTax) and Citrix (makers of GoToMeeting), to leading charities like the Nature Conservancy, to progressive non-profits like Welcoming America. Her attention to client objectives and ability to deliver insight that impacts the bottom line has earned her client relationships that extend over a decade.

From her work in the consumer sector, Lisa takes best research practices in branding, marketing, packaging and product development and leverages them for non-profit brands and membership development work. For corporate clients she combines 20 years of innovation in consumer research with her understanding of donor and activist engagement to help her corporate clients with customer relationship building and brand loyalty insights.

Lisa developed a team of researchers and data scientists to innovate the firm’s market segmentation approach. While many segmentations are values and attitudes driven, Edge uses behavior measures, trade-off analysis, CRM and other data to drive actionable segmentations.

Lisa leads the firm’s Conservation/Sustainability and Social Marketing practices and over the years she has conducted research for marquee brands such as The Ocean Conservancy, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and The David and Lucile Packard Foundation to name a few.

Prior to joining Edge Research, she served as research director for SeaWeb during its start-up as an innovative non-profit specializing in ocean conservation communication. Previously she spent seven years (her last year as Vice-President) at The Mellman Group, a national public opinion research and campaign strategy firm.

Lisa graduated summa cum laude with a B.A in Political Communications from the George Washington University in Washington, DC. She lives in Arlington, VA with her husband and two daughters. Lisa’s volunteer time includes acting as the parent liaison for outdoor learning at Key Spanish Immersion School, working with the science teachers to bring all grades outdoors for investigative, hands-on bilingual experiences working in the schoolyard garden.

 

Adam Burns

Chief Operations Officer
Adam Burns

Adam joined Edge in 2013 and serves as Chief Operations Officer and Senior Research Analyst. He oversees team operations and ensures that Edge continues to employ innovative techniques that uncover implications and inform strategy. He also cultivates the firm’s growing efforts in communications research and social marketing. Adam’s recent project efforts include informing messaging and strategy for heart health and safe medicine use campaigns, as well as re-branding and target market assessment studies.

Prior to joining Edge, Adam served as a Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning & Research at Porter Novelli. There, he led primary research efforts in the for-profit, non-profit, and government sectors, building an extensive resume of providing strategic guidance for clients including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, P&G, HP, the IRS, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services. In 2012, his work with CMS garnered a Diamond SABRE Award for Superior Achievement in Measurement and Evaluation.

Adam also served as Research Director at Teenage Research Unlimited, a leading consulting firm specializing in teens and young adults. He coordinated projects for clients such as Sony, MasterCard, and truth®.

He received a graduate degree from the Georgetown Public Policy Institute and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He currently teaches Understanding Markets and Audiences at the Johns Hopkins University Graduate School of Communication, and in Fall 2012, he won the Excellence in Teaching Award. His true passion is spending time with his wife and two daughters in Bethesda, Maryland. He also loves tennis and all things UNC!

 

Gayle Vogel

Gayle Vogel

Gayle has more than 15 years of experience in marketing research serving a diverse client base from the financial services and telecom sectors to healthcare, non-profits, and government agencies. She has continuing relationships with The Hartford, Kaiser Permanente, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and The Nature Conservancy, among others.

A good listener, Gayle is well suited to adapting client business questions and challenges into a comprehensive research plan geared to yield meaningful insights and inform decision-making. One of her strengths is taking large amounts of data collected from diverse audiences, customer groups, or geographies and connecting the dots to tell a data-driven story that can be used to shape strategy and be absorbed at many levels within an organization.

Gayle’s specialties include customer and member retention, advertising tracking, product optimization and pricing, brand development and positioning, and message alignment. Also experienced in qualitative research, Gayle has conducted countless in-depth interviews and focus groups. She has completed moderator training coursework with RIVA Market Research.

Prior to joining Edge, Gayle was Senior Consultant with The Strategis Group, a telecommunications research firm serving the broadband, wireless, and Internet industries. She laid the foundation of her career as a researcher in the financial services practice of Opinion Research Corporation in Princeton, New Jersey.

Gayle is an avid runner and lives in Washington, D.C.

 

Sarah Rodgers

VP and Senior Research Analyst
Sarah Rodgers

Sarah has over 12 years of experience in research design and analysis. She works with a wide variety of corporate and non-profit clients across a range of industries, including financial services, consumer goods, retail, health care, environment, and education. She has extensive experience in survey design, implementation, and analysis, and is also a skilled focus group moderator and in-depth interviewer.

Sarah has been a member of the Edge team for over ten years. She graduated from the College of William and Mary with a B.A. in Economics. Her professional affiliations include membership in the Qualitative Research Consultants Association (QRCA), as well as coursework at RIVA Market Research. She lives in Leesburg, Virginia with her husband and two children.

 

Karen Emmerson

VP and Senior Research Analyst
Karen Emmerson

Karen joined Edge in 2011 and has over eight years of experience in strategic research design, implementation, and analysis. She conducts quantitative and qualitative research, with expertise in phone, in-person, and online data collection. She excels at turning complex data into an understandable and compelling story that clients can easily translate into action.

Karen works with both non-profit and corporate entities, and her current client list includes the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Meals on Wheels Association of America, the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), Kaiser Permanente, Transamerica, and the Alliance for Aging Research.

Prior to joining Edge, Karen provided strategic advice as a Research Analyst at Lake Research Partners. She conducted political polling for local, state, and federal races on several issues, including emerging demographics in the American electorate, improving youth turnout, and marriage equality. In 2010, she collaborated on an in-person survey of rural women in Liberia, where she trained and managed a team of interviewers.

Karen has a Master’s degree in Political Management with an emphasis in Polling and Strategic Research from The George Washington University and a degree in Statistics and Political Science from the University of Iowa. She is also a RIVA-certified moderator. In her spare time, Karen enjoys taking dance classes and volunteers with Streetwise Partners, an organization dedicated to providing mentoring in professional development to low-income individuals in the Washington, D.C. area.

Lewis Perez

Vice President – Programming
Lewis Perez

Lewis came to Edge in 2008 to oversee the implementation of SPSS Dimensions survey software — the gold standard for the survey research industry. Lewis  brought with him almost a decade of experience in online project management, programming, and data processing, and quickly revolutionized the company’s survey programming, tabling, and quality control processes. As Senior Technology Manager, Lewis oversees all aspects of survey programming and data processing at Edge, and manages a team of other programmers.

He came to Edge from GFK Custom Research North America/NOP World United Business Media where he was Lead Programmer on more than 350 global projects. Prior to that, he was a Programmer at Cozint Interactive.

Lewis lives in Miami, Florida with his wife and two sons.

Nathan Flores

Senior Director of Operations
Nathan Flores

Nathan Flores joined Edge Research in December 2021 to lead the firm’s Field and Business Operations. In his role at Edge, he works with Analyst, Field, and Programming teams to ensure our qualitative and quantitative data collection efforts meet the highest standards, are cost effective, and adhere to the best practices in our industry. Nathan also cultivates relationships with research partners and explores innovations in the research industry, always looking for ways to further strengthen Edge Research’s tools and techniques. He is also responsible for analyzing operational efficiency and identifying ways to streamline firm processes and research operations. Nathan also spearheads the Edge Research internship program.

Prior to joining Edge Research, Nathan spent five years leading projects at a boutique research and strategy firm in Chicago, working with clients in the pharmaceutical, consumer packaged goods/retail, and home improvement space. Most recently, he oversaw all qualitative project operations and a team of project managers in that role. He has a passion for people and processes and enjoys finding new solutions to make the research process more efficient and user-friendly.

In his free time, Nathan can be found where there’s live music. He greatly enjoys summertime in his homebase of Chicago, spending time with his dog and two cats, and perfecting his newest (quarantine-driven) hobby, rug tufting.

Keith Tonsager

Keith Tonsager

Keith came to Edge Research in 2010 and leads Edge Research’s team for data innovation. He has worked with a diverse group of corporate and non-profit clients such as Intuit, The Hartford, the NFL, Defenders of Wildlife, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Nature Conservancy, the USO, and National Geographic Channel. He is also Edge Research’s primary methodologist, and advises clients using tools such as regression, cluster, MaxDiff, and Choice-Based Conjoint.

He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania in 2004 and his Master’s degree in Government at Cornell University in 2009. He has also studied quantitative methods at the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research at the University of Michigan. Keith lives in Washington, DC with his wife Lindsey, daughter Ilia, and Boston Terrier Ellie.

Venkat Vala

Data Scientist
Venkat Vala

Venkat joined Edge Research as a Data Scientist in 2017. In this role, he collaborates with our clients and other Edge team members to maximize the strategic information we glean from data analyses. Venkat greatly enjoys math and puzzles and had intensive coursework in mathematical modelling, machine learning and data warehousing while obtaining his undergraduate and graduate degrees. He is particularly passionate about employing advanced statistical methods and machine learning algorithms like regression, boosting, clustering, and text mining to derive strategic implications. His current client roster includes the NFL, the American Forest Foundation, the American Chemical Society, and Operation Homefront.

Venkat completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering at Manipal University and his Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering at Arizona State University. Venkat lives in Maryland and likes spending his weekends hiking and swimming.

Mariel Molina

Mariel Molina

Mariel officially joined Edge in 2011 and has nearly a decade of extensive experience in research design, execution, and analysis. She is skilled in conducting complex studies and delivering results that are actionable and engaging.

She has managed quantitative and qualitative research both domestically and internationally. With her fluent knowledge of Spanish and growing proficiency in Portuguese, she hopes to continue expanding Edge’s multicultural and global reach.

Mariel previously worked with a variety of clients in the private, non-profit, and government areas, including companies in financial services, telecommunications, retail, health, technology, and education, as well as environmental and consumer groups. Her current client list encompasses corporate and non-profit organizations such as Hair Cuttery and its sister brands Bubbles and Salon Cielo, the leading online home-design platform Houzz, the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), and Lungevity.

Prior to joining Edge, Mariel was the research manager for a custom-research firm in the Washington, D.C. area for over five years. She earned a B.S. from George Mason University’s School of Management in Management Information Systems and Decision Sciences, with minors in Information Technologies and Marketing.

Mariel has a keen eye for design and actively pursues creative learning. She recently received a certificate in Interior Decoration. Some of her other interests include travel, photography, languages, and art. She lives in Northern Virginia.

Glynis Donaldson

Glynis Donaldson

Glynis Donaldson joined the Edge team in 2018. She currently supports several facets of quantitative and qualitative research for both for-profit and nonprofit clients. Her efforts include assisting with data collection, data analysis and report development, and leading quality control reviews at multiple stages of the research process. She particularly enjoys transforming challenging data into easily digestible, insightful reports.

Prior to joining Edge, Glynis worked at Baruch College in New York, where she employed her background in analysis and marketing to launch and manage an online professional development program in real estate finance. She also worked for a marketing research firm in Guam, which she calls home. In this capacity, she developed comprehensive reports on media usage across the island.

Glynis brings a unique background to the Edge team, with a BA in Anthropology and Italian from St. John’s University; there, she conducted research on shifting cultural identities of second- and third-generation Italian immigrants. She also holds an MS in Statistics from Baruch College. When she’s not digging into data at the office, she can be found reading, running, or continuing her quest to find the best ramen in DC. She lives in Arlington, Virginia.

Liana Gainsboro

Liana Gainsboro

Liana joined Edge Research as an intern in June 2019 and became a full member of the Edge team in August. She graduated from the College of Charleston with a major in Communication and a minor in Marketing. While in school, Liana worked as the marketing intern for her school’s dining services company, gaining transferable communication, project management, and marketing analysis skills.

At Edge, Liana assists the team in collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data. She also supports Edge’s quality control measures by reviewing surveys, landscape analyses, and presentations. Liana is excited to continue to learn and strengthen her skills especially when it comes to understanding audience mindset.

When Liana is not working, she’s either watching Friends (again), reading a book, or volunteering with local organizations to promote social justice.

Edriam Mota

Edriam Mota

Edriam joined Edge Research in 2018 and serves on the Programming Team. In this capacity, he develops surveys, conducts quality control, processes collected data, and collaborates with Edge Research account teams to foster analyses and interpretation. Edriam’s unique strength lies in visual questionnaire design, developing engaging questions that maintain respondent interest throughout survey instruments. Edriam continues to bring forth new ideas and revolutionize the Edge survey experience.

Before joining Edge, Edriam worked for over a decade as a Front-End Developer and Programmer at Microsoft and Inmediata Health Group, and he received his bachelor’s in Computer Science. In his spare time, Edriam enjoys playing softball and relaxing with family. Edriam now resides in Miramar, Florida.

Priya Patel

Priya Patel

Priya joined Edge Research in 2018.Her analytical and technical abilities, developed through strong coursework in statistics and computer science, support Edge’s quantitative efforts. She primarily works as a member of the Programming Team. In this capacity, she develops surveys and processes the resulting data to ensure efficient and accurate analyses. She assists several client teams, with topics ranging from tax preparation to education policy.

Before joining Edge, Priya worked as a survey programmer for three multi-national market research companies. She utilizes several programming languages and has worked with multiple visualization tools to enhance her skills.

Allison Schubauer

Programmer
Allison Schubauer

Allison joined the Edge Research team in October 2019 as a Research Assistant/Programmer. Prior to joining Edge, she was a business analyst at a nonprofit association in Washington, DC. There, she created and implemented innovative processes to make the association’s efforts more cost-effective and efficient. Allison also brings a strong foundation in quantitative and programming skills from her extensive STEM coursework while earning her B.S. from Harvey Mudd College with a minor in computer science. She also served as an intern at the California Institute of Technology, where she developed data processing and visualization applications in Python. Allison will contribute her knowledge and skills to several client teams across Edge, on topics ranging from education to tax preparation.

In addition to programming, Allison enjoys drawing, knitting, and visiting state parks. She also volunteers with a local cat rescue organization to increase awareness of adoption opportunities in the DC region.

Valeria Pareja

Research Assistant
Valeria Pareja

Valeria joined Edge Research in January 2019. Before becoming a member of the Edge team, Valeria served at a local nonprofit that focused on supporting LGBT lawyers and legal professionals with networking and job opportunities. Valeria graduated from George Mason University in Fall 2018 with a major in Sociology. During her studies, she became increasingly interested in research methods, especially qualitative and quantitative efforts designed to explore racial inequality and education reform.

At Edge, she plays several roles. Valeria is a key member of the Field Operations team, working to ensure that the qualitative and quantitative data we collect accurately represent our target audiences of focus. She also assists the team with data analyses and quality control reviews of our surveys and data presentations for both our for-profit and nonprofit clients.  She greatly enjoys growing her marketing research skillset, learning Edge’s methodology and practices, and working with such a great team.

In her free time, she enjoys digging for new music, supporting her local DJ and producer friends, and sewing her own clothes.
